Killed While Hunting? The Unsolved Mystery of Norman Ladner Jr

In the small town of Picayune, Mississippi, nestled in the quiet of rural America, the tragic and mysterious death of 17-year-old Norman Charles Ladner Jr. remains an unsolved mystery.

Norman Charles Ladner (1972-1989) - Find a Grave Memorial

On August 21, 1989, Norman, a popular teen who loved hunting on his family’s 122-acre property, left home to enjoy his favorite hobby.

When he failed to return by his 7 PM curfew, his father, Norman Sr., went searching. What he discovered was every parent’s nightmare—Norman’s lifeless body, a gunshot wound to his head.

The county sheriff, Lorrance Lumpkin, swiftly ruled the death a suicide without conducting a proper investigation. The coroner agreed with this verdict almost instantly. However, the Ladner family and many in the community had serious doubts. Norman was described as a happy, well-adjusted teen with no known struggles that could explain such an act.

As Norman’s parents began their own investigation, troubling details surfaced. The bullet that killed Norman was never found, and his wallet was empty, with both his money and ID missing.

His body also had a suspicious one-inch cut on his head, which the sheriff claimed was caused by hitting a tree root—a theory contradicted by the location of his death. Even more unsettling, Norman Sr. later found a bullet buried near the scene, but it didn’t match Norman’s gun. When the bullet was returned by authorities, the family believed it had been switched.

Further discoveries painted a darker picture. Near the site of Norman’s death, a homemade radio device was found. A former DEA agent identified it as a tool used by drug traffickers to signal aircraft for smuggling operations. The Ladners suspected Norman might have stumbled upon illegal activity in the woods that day.

Norman’s mother was later confronted by an unknown man who chillingly warned her to stop investigating: “You have other children. I suggest you raise them for your own good.” The man vanished without further explanation.

Adding to the mystery, Norman’s missing ID was found four years later in New York. Despite these compelling clues, the case remains unsolved, and Norman’s parents passed away without finding justice for their son.

We will probably never get answers to these questions. There is one thing every one, except sheriff Lumpkin’s friends and family, agree without a doubt…

This was not a suicide, he saw something that day he wasn’t suppose to, and paid the price for it.

Norman Lander jr, is a chilling warning to all those in a small town. While it might be safer compared to a city, we still have a danger living among us and that being…

People with “connects” who can get away with anything if they know the right people and the tragedy that comes to those that make the mistake, of crossing them.

Even if the person is an innocent kid that simply picked the wrong day to do their favorite activity.

To this day, the Ladner case is a cautionary tale for the residents of Picayune, a reminder that even in small towns, danger can be unseen. The unanswered questions surrounding Norman’s death leave some questions: Who was behind the warning? Why was the investigation so inadequate? And what did Norman uncover that led to his death?
