The Victims

The five victims were all young students, just beginning their college journeys:

1. Christina Powell (17) and Sonja Larson (18) – Roommates and incoming freshmen at the University of Florida.

2. Christa Hoyt (18) – A Santa Fe Community College student who aspired to become a police officer.

3. Tracy Paules (23) and Manuel “Manny” Taboada (23) – Close friends and University of Florida seniors.

All five were killed between August 24th and August 27th, 1990 in what seemed to be a carefully planned killing spree.

The Horrific Crimes

The killers attacks followed a pattern. He broke into apartments at night, often prying open doors or windows with a screwdriver or knife. His brutality escalated with each murder and his gruesome tactics left investigators horrified.

– He found Christina Powell asleep on the couch, but left her undisturbed.

– He broke into her apartment while she wasn’t home and waited in the dark.

– When Christa arrived, he attacked, raped, and murdered her.

Terrifying.

– In a twist, he decapitated her body and placed her head on a shelf, facing the room.

August 27, 1990: Tracy Paules and Manuel Taboada

Two days later he entered an apartment shared by Tracy Paules and Manuel Taboada. Unlike his previous victims Manny Taboada was a strong and athletic man which led to a brutal struggle.

– Manny tried to fight him off, but he overpowered him and stabbed him to death.

– He then attacked Tracy Paules who tried to lock herself in her room but was ultimately murdered.

– Like the previous victims their bodies were posed in disturbing positions.

The discovery of the bodies sent shockwaves through the University of Florida and the surrounding community. Students slept in groups, parents withdrew their children from classes, and local gun stores saw a surge in sales. More than 700 students withdrew from UF, fearing for their lives.

The police were desperate for leads, but the killer had left few clues. Investigators initially suspected another student, Ed Humphrey, who had a history of mental illness and violent behavior.

He was arrested on an unrelated charge, but police soon realized he was not their killer.

The Capture of Danny Rolling

While Gainesville police searched for the murderer, Danny Rolling was already behind bars.

On September 7, 1990 he was arrested in Ocala, Florida for robbing a grocery store.

– Authorities later connected Rolling to the Gainesville murders when his campsite was found near one of the crime scenes. Inside police discovered audio tapes in which he confessed to the killings.

– DNA evidence eventually tied him to all five murders.

Investigators then learned that Rolling had also committed a triple homicide in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1989—using the same violent methods.
