A Vanishing That Left More Questions Than Answers
Sage Smith was a 19-year-old from Charlottesville, Virginia.
Assigned male at birth, Sage identified as a transgender woman and was in the process of transitioning. Friends described her as vibrant, confident, and unapologetically herself.
She had dreams of building a life, finding independence, and fully stepping into her identity.
But her journey was not without challenges.
Sage faced:

- instability
- and at times, financial hardship
Like many young people navigating identity and independence, she was vulnerable.
The Night She Disappeared
On November 20, 2012, Sage was last seen near West Main Street in Charlottesville.
She had planned to meet someone that night.
Witnesses reported that she got into a vehicle with an unknown individual.
That was the last confirmed sighting.

The Immediate Aftermath
When Sage failed to return, friends and family became concerned.
A missing person report was filed, and local police began investigating.
But from the beginning, the case faced challenges.
There were:
- limited witnesses
- no confirmed suspect
- little physical evidence
The person Sage planned to meet was never clearly identified.
A Case With Limited Leads
Investigators worked to piece together Sage’s final movements.
They examined:
- phone records
- known associates
- possible online contacts
Despite these efforts, the trail quickly went cold.
Police later identified a person of interest, but no charges were ever filed.
Authorities have never publicly named a suspect.

However, no evidence has confirmed this.

Sage’s disappearance sparked activism and awareness.
Her case highlighted:

- gaps in investigative attention
Community members organized searches, vigils, and awareness campaigns.
But answers never came.
